The best hardware/software interface around.
This is a sleek system which I will provide to you. We'll spend up to 30 minutes using it - catalog and label some wines, add to and subtract from your inventory, get any necessary updates to the system online, insert wine notes...It's not only very powerful but quite user-friendly. You'll enjoy my installation and tutorial. Read more »
Cellartracker.com
A logical, interactive community of wine lovers.
If your bottle has a UPC/EAN barcode on the back label, it's safe to say that inventorying on a remote Internet repository is a breeze. However, what about the garagiste wines that are popping up worldwide? There's a problem as far as scanning the wine in - but data entry by hand is fine if you have the time. The best thing about Cellartracker is the eventual ability to garner the advice of thousands of fellow users about which wines suit you and when they're at their best. Eric is brilliant, and he's got some dynamite ongoing upgrades with some very smooth results. In fact, I encourage you to register at www.cellartracker.com and join in the forum fun. If you're programming savvy, there's no end to how much you can contribute to the community (after you contribute via PayPal, keeping the mean machine running!)
Standalone Software
There are many packages of multiple licensure levels.
Freeware, shareware, try and then buy. It's a big world full of myriad tools for myriad operating systems, desktop to handheld to mobile phone. Technology can open up many pathways in life but what's important is functionality and ease of use. Too many cellar organizing packages have been written to analyze from the top down but I've installed, nitpicked, challenged, enjoyed, eschewed and uninstalled dozens. For a good basis of understanding, the primary asset to seek in one of these programs is breadth of input information and visual mapping. A solid rule is that if it's free, the catch in the Microsoft/Mac environment will be flexibility. When you find what you like, go the extra dollar and pay the programmer. If you're shy about installation or need some advice, give me a shout and I'll either walk you through it or take a few days to do audition the program myself and give you my honest appraisal and recommendation.
